Brotas is a Brazilian municipality located in the interior of the state of São Paulo. In 2003, the Brotas Municipal Sustainable Tourism Law was enacted, the first in Brazil for adventure and nature tourism, serving as a national reference and inspiring the standardisation of adventure and ecotourism tourism in the country. Brotas received recognition from the Green and Blue Municipality Programme in 2008 and in 2014 was designated a Tourist Resort by the State of São Paulo.
The origin of the name"Brotas" remains unknown, although there are four theories about it: the first suggests a relationship with water springs, the second with grass sprouts that appeared after hikers passed through, the third relates to the characteristic cakes made in the region, while the fourth and most plausible hypothesis refers to the origins of Brotas' founder, Dona Francisca Ribeiro dos Reis. A descendant of Portuguese Catholics and a devotee of "Nossa Senhora das Brotas", it is suggested that she named the town in honour of the saint.
